General Metrology Subjects: Level 1

This badge curriculum provides the basic general knowledge needed for a beginner metrologist starting in their career. We cover the following topics:

The system of measurements- This covers what calibration is, what SI units are, what BIPM is, and the principles of measurement traceability.

Errors and Uncertainties- This training teaches calibrators about the different types of errors we as metrologists will encounter or cause in a measurement. We also discuss the GUM and basically what uncertainties are. We discuss type A and type B considerations, at a beginner level.

Numbers in Calibration- This training covers SI unit prefixes, scientific notation, rounding rules, and significant figures. This training is specific to what a calibration professional needs to know for proper documentation of calibration measurements.

Basic Terminology- In this training we start the familiarization to metrology definitions of common words. We introduce the VIM and talk about some of the most common vocabulary words for a new technicians, like the difference between accuracy and precision.

Tolerances- In this training we get the technician familiar with the most common types of tolerances, TARs, data sheet interpretation and understanding written standards.

Quality Systems- In this training we introduce the students to the different types of quality systems they could encounter in calibration, both in lab and at customers. We talk about the quality principles as well as introduce the student to ISO/IEC 17025 and 9001
